Built in 1939, Rockefeller Center is a national historic landmark located in the heart of New York City. Considered the hub of midtown Manhattan, it’s home to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, Radio City Music Hall, and numerous shops, restaurants and sites to explore.

Spanning 22 acres, this popular NYC attraction is made up of 19 commercial buildings, and encompasses six square blocks between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas from 48th to 51st Streets. Rockefeller Center is also home to NBC Studios (remember “30 Rock”?), where fans of NBC Nightly News, the Today Show and Saturday Night Live line up for exciting behind-the-scenes tours of the broadcast studios.

The holidays are an especially magical time of year in New York City and at Rockefeller Center. It's the place to kick off the holiday season by attending the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Lace up the skates and take a few laps around the iconic Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink. Then sit and relax with a cup of hot chocolate at one of the many nearby cafes and restaurants.

Trip Tips: Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center is an exciting destination any time or season. Millions of people come each year to admire the art deco architecture and design, the towering statues, and the beautiful art nouveau murals. With so much history, culture and points of interest, it’s easy to see why Rockefeller Center is a must-see NYC attraction that sits atop almost everyone’s “Things to Do in New York City” list! Here are a few things you should keep in mind when planning your visit to Rockefeller Center:

  • This may seem obvious to some, but don't go looking for the skating rink after winter's over. They transform it into an outdoor cafe when the warm weather arrives.
  • For some of the best views of New York City, including the Empire State Building, be sure to pay a visit to the Top of the Rock. It's worth the price of admission!
  • Once you've entered lobby facing the security desk, look up at the mural. Then walk to the far left of the lobby, and look up at it again. Walk to the opposite side, look again. The changing perspective is pure genius. Ask a security guard or tour guide for the story.
  • Some people don't recommend the Rockefeller Center tour itself, as it doesn't take you anywhere you can't go yourself. The studio tours, however, are fun… as long as you remember it's just one giant NBC commercial.
